"Reason I Sing the Blues"

In His Own Words

My CD, "Reason I Sing the Blues", contains some of my best songs. I can truly say I have prepared for this CD all my life, because I do have lots and lots of reasons why I sing the blues. I released this, my second solo CD, on a limited test in April 2006. My first solo CD was called "Casino Dream" which was released in the summer of 2002. While this is being written I am preparing for my third solo CD.

But that's getting ahead of myself. I'm going to work backwards and tell you my history. With my family band, The Perry's, we released 2 CDs. Both CDs contain some of my original songs. "Voodoo Charm" was released in the fall of 1997 and The Perry's "Got What It Takes" was released in the summer of 2000. My previous recordings took place between 1988 and 1989 with my band known as Howl-N-Madd and the Relaxations. Our first single was titled "Mississippi" which was one of my original songs about our great state. Our alblum "Guitar Man" is still a favorite of mine. Before this I had not released a record in almost nine years.

In 1979 I released a single on my own label called "Down At The Disco" which was also quite a learning experience. My next previous recording was released in the late spring of 1976. The song was called "Funky Like a Donkey" on Fantasy Records in Berkeley CA. Previously I released a single in mid 1973 on the Jewel Paula label entitled "Sittin on the Banks of the River" and "Can't Let You Go" which takes me back three more years to 1970, the year my solo career started. With the help of people like Donny Hathaway, Gerald Simm etc. I recorded my first single entitled "I Was a Fool" and "Why Can't This Time" on the Dispo/Canyon label.

It has been a fun thirtysix years trip that is nowhere near over. Because also on this same thirtysix year trip I met giants like Lee "Shot" Williams, Cash McCall, the late Ted Taylor, Fontella Bass, Little Johnny Taylor etc. I don't have enough room to put down all the names of the people I wrote songs for and recorded with. I even wrote and played a bit of gospel music. While I was a studio musician for Stan Lewis at Chess Records, I wrote songs for groups like the Salem Travelers, Mildred Clark and the Melody Airs, the East Saint Louis Gospelaires, along with a host of other groups and solo gospel singers. Now that does'nt count all the people I've played with, but anyways thats another story that goes all the way back to the late summer of 1961. So like I said before it has been a long, fun trip and I hope you all like my newest CD, "Jook Joint Jump" (available soon at bandVillage).
